Matahio and Genesis Energy Partner on Sidewinder Gas Storage Trial
Progress in energy requires collaboration and partners willing to test new ideas together. True to its progressive energy ethos, Matahio Energy initiated a trial at its Sidewinder site to explore the potential for gas energy storage. This initiative aims to determine how existing infrastructure can be used to store gas and improve flexibility within New Zealand's energy system.
The Partnership with Genesis Energy
Following a successful proof-of-concept phase, the project advanced to the next stage. To support the demanding injection and extraction programme, Matahio secured the necessary gas supply by partnering with Genesis Energy, directly supporting the wider sector goal of improving gas availability during periods of peak demand.
Impact and Resilience
Projects like Sidewinder are vital as they have the potential to strengthen resilience and improve the security of supply during peak periods or unexpected disruptions. This collaboration showcases how partnerships across the sector can turn promising ideas into practical progress, supporting a more resilient and lower-carbon energy future. It also expands Matahio's exposure to emerging energy solutions and supports its broader diversification efforts.
